Biography

Early Artistic Beginnings

Growing up amidst the inspiring landscapes of the Lake District, my artistic journey began with a deep-seated love for making and creating. This passion truly ignited at the age of 14 during an art class project focused on patterns. I became captivated by the power of repetition and the transformative effect of different colour palettes on a single design. From that point onwards, patterns and repetition naturally found their way into all my artistic endeavours.

Finding the Medium: Printmaking

My exploration eventually led me to the mediums of lino and screen printing. This choice was driven both by my enduring fascination with repetition and, significantly, by navigating life with fibromyalgia since my teenage years. The resulting shaky hands made achieving the precise lines and shapes I envisioned with traditional painting challenging. It was through the introduction of linocut printing by one of my teachers that I discovered a medium that allowed me to realize my artistic vision.

Integrating Textiles

Since then, lino has become my primary artistic language. More recently, I’ve begun integrating various textile techniques into my prints, including needle felting, embroidery, and hand sewing. This allows me to introduce a three-dimensional element to my work. As someone with monocular vision, the tactile nature of these additions offers a unique way for me to experience and understand the forms within my art.

Artistic Influences

Throughout my artistic development, I have been fortunate to find inspiration in the work of many artists. Andrew Carter, with his nature-based creations, has been a significant influence, particularly in his use of colour and form. I also deeply admire William Morris, a master of classic pattern design. While my work leans towards abstraction, his remarkable and unique colour choices continue to inspire me.

Inspiration & Future Direction

Looking ahead, I plan to continue creating within the Lake District, drawing endless inspiration from its breath taking natural landscapes. My patterns often originate from line drawings of the plants and water I observe, or are simply inspired by the inherent shapes found in nature.

Abstract Lino Patterns

My main focus, I carve abstract designs into linoleum. I then ink and print these carvings, emphasizing line, shape repetition, and positive/negative space.

Architecture

Artwork inspired by buildings and urban landscapes, ranging from depictions to abstract interpretations of form and space.

Waterprints

Designs using the flow of water for insparation, often resulting in fluid and organic patterns.

Abstract Screen Prints

A form of non-representational art, created by forcing ink through a stenciled screen. My focus lies in colour, texture, and shape.
